By popular demand (and my own curiosity!) here is a look at gaming on the new MacBook Pro with TouchBar. This model is the 2016 2.7GHz with the AMD Radeon Pro 460 GPU. Its currently the highest end graphics card apple makes for the Mac.
Click to expand. That's not exactly true. Before and during the PS2 era consoles excelled, but during the PS2 era was when 3D hardware acceleration came to PC's. After that generation PC's have always beat consoles.
Take for instance the PS3 which launched in 2006 with a custom Nvidia 7800GTX. The 8800GTX released the same week as the PS3 and had 3x the video memory, had 4x the memory bandwidth and was 4x faster. The PS3 GPU is a gimped Geforce 7800 with half the memory, half the bandwidth and half the ROP's then a normal 7800GTX. 360 used a custom ATI X1900, likely gimped as well, which was just a X1800 with 3 pixel shaders instead of 1. A high end pc owner could buy two of those X1900's and use crossfire to get even more performance. That's not even taking into consideration computers could have more memory, faster CPU's and faster storage space.

Don't take my word for it. Nvidia Senior VP. Click to expand. Right and wrong the PS3 did use a custom Nvida 7800 series GPU at the time and that itself had a fixed function based shader and vertex pipeline architecture. While the 360 used a Custom GPU that was not of any kind of reseblence of a GPU on the market at that time it used a as of yet to be used in the PC GPU space first of its kind Unified shader archtecure.
48 vector units vector processors for execution, divided in three dynamically scheduled SIMD groups of 16 processors each. (each pipeline is capable of running either pixel or ) PS3 GPU.
