My result: A ring that swung back and forth = BOY. If the ring swings in a strong circular motion, it’s a girl. The theory: If the woman takes her wedding, threads it on a string and swings it over her pregnant belly as she's lying down and it swings back and forth like a pendulum, it’s a boy. My result: I am 38 and it was 2017 = BOY. If one number is even and one number is odd, it’s a boy. The theory: If the year of conception and the mother’s age at conception are both even or both odd numbers, it's a girl. My result: I'm 38 (with a lunar age of 39) and conception was in September = GIRL. The theory: A chart that dates back more than 700 years, and recently discovered buried in a royal tomb, can tell you your baby's sex based on the month of conception and the mother’s lunar birthday. My result: During the past three doctor’s visits, the fetal heart beat has been 170, 150 and 140 beats per minutes = GIRL. The theory: If the fetal heart rate is fast - 140 beats per minute or more - it’s a girl. My result: I look as though I’m carrying a low bowling ball under my shirt = BOY. The theory: Carrying a baby high? Break out the pink. My result: I was queasy for a few weeks but, thankfully, never sick = BOY. The theory: The sicker you are, the more likely it is that the baby is a girl. She handled selecting and administering the tests (so I didn’t unconsciously sway the results) while, thankfully, avoiding any of the tests that involved me peeing into a cup, using chemicals or eating cloves of garlic or cabbage. The folklores came true for them, would they be as accurate for me? I decided to test them out.Īt four months pregnant, I enlisted the help of Repository colleague Alison Matas to help me test some of the most popular gender prediction theories. Most of the moms based their predictions on the old wives' tales they had heard during their pregnancy that turned out to be true. If the baby is moving around during the time we are listening, the heart rate will be a little higher just like your heart rate when you exercise.Įven though there is no truth to this old wives’ tale, it is still fun to think about and play “guess the gender” with family and friends.I knew from the day the pregnancy test revealed two pink lines that I wasn’t waiting nearly nine months to find out whether the baby was a boy or girl.īut it wasn’t until other veteran moms (and a few non-moms) began guessing the sex of my unborn child that I began to think that maybe I didn’t even have to wait until the 20-week ultrasound to find out. The rate at any given time is often related to the movement of the baby. Then, moving forward, there is a normal range of fetal heart rate from 110 to 160 beats per minute. What we do notice is that fetal heart rate is usually above 160 beats per minute from about 9 weeks until about 13 weeks gestation. And guess what?Ībout 50% were boys and 50% were girls… amazing right? There was no difference in fetal heart between boys and girls. This information was then correlated to the gender found at the 18 week sonogram. A study done in 2006 recorded the heart rate during about 1000 first trimester sonograms. I hate to spoil your fun, but there is no correlation between fetal heart rate at any point in pregnancy and the gender of your baby.

Bass, he gets a kick out of perpetuating this old wives’ tale. My response is often the same and is always true, “Yup, it will be a girl… 50% of the time.”įor those of you who have seen Dr.
